Tech News This Week

You can run, but you can’t hide… from the Feds, that is. So you think just because Microsoft won its battle last month against the US government that it can now legitimately refuse to give up emails of non-Americans, think again. A Pennsylvania court has ordered Google to hand over some e-mails stored abroad, insisting they fall under US jurisdiction. Suit up, this is going to be a fight to the finish. Time for a private email server? Email on your HAT? Go propose it at the HAT ideas page.

No means no. Even in VR.  Gamers and developers are debating sexual harassment in Virtual Reality but is it real? Let’s be consistent here. Virtual reality is virtually real…so clearly sexual harassment is then also virtually… sexual harassment. What’s not to get?

Getting old with tech is a reality that needs fixing, as Huge Inc senior editor Lauren Streib discovered while trying to sort out her ageing mum’s digital life. A HAT-enabled world might just simplify many things…

When was the last time I wore this dress, Facebook? Now you can get an answer as FB begins to use AI to analyse context for photo searches. Let’s hope it’s better than its photo recognition coz I’m tired of being tagged as cousin Sally…

Be Cautious About…

You’re getting more love than you want…with leaky dating apps. Seems they could be revealing more than they should, as this WIRED investigation has discovered.

Activism rules…but be safe…More and more people are turning to social media to express their dissenting voice on today’s tumultuous politics. Here’s a guide on how to be a safer activist online.

Impress Your Friends With…

Holography. Astrophysicists have discovered first evidence that the universe is a hologram. And that everything we see is in fact 2-D and not 3-D as we believe. So does that mean we’re flat? I mean, what does that mean?

Geek Out On…

Ancient sites. Channel your inner Indiana Jones with GlobalXplorer, which enables wanna-be archeologists to discover hidden heritage sites around the world. Fedora hat not compulsory…

And Finally…

Tell your boss you’re taking a loooong lunch break. We know that communing with nature is good for the soul, and research shows that it also helps change the brain and improve our mental health. The HAT datamates (currently in development) could tell you how much greenspaces you’ve encountered in the week, and nudge you to chill out at the park!

Till next week, y’all!

Featured News: Rumpel 2.0 hits stands this week.

Hot off the presses: a new edition of the Rumpel Lite iPhone app is out today. If you’ve been waiting for the HAT to be ready for you to take a look, now’s a good time to try us out.

Every personal data store (PDS) is always asked, whether by potential customers, investors, or analysts, to be built around a use case. We didn’t do that – we built a platform instead. Rumpel 2.0 is evidence of a fully-functioning PDS ecosystem, with secure protocols for exchanges between HATs and Internet applications. We are ready to scale. See what an application — a small, minor functionality on top of a massive, platform capability — can do with even a little bit of control over our personal data. Annoyed about immigration. MADHatters editor Leila Trilby is penning posts mid-week now – she wrote about immigration last. Let me know if you’re interested in guest-authoring.

The many-tentacled beast. Our community lives in lots of places. There’s a community forum (user feedback and troubleshooting),  Facebook and Twitter (current affairs and news), Leila’s Medium account (articles), and a Facebook group for our researchers.

Questions from the audience. We’re actively user-testing Rumpel Lite and HAT onboarding. Let me know via email or Twitter if you can help.

Makin’ money in Singapore. One of our newest service providers, Noggin Asia, will be setting up a new personal data economy in Singapore with HAT technology. We’ll be talking to them on Wednesday to get a deeper look at their plans. Expect press releases.

With love, from HAT.
